A brilliant opportunity to refresh both professionally and personally

Emma Halkyard, LCNUK Member

This blog is part of our #LCNUK2022 series, sharing attendees experiences of our LCNUK Annual Conference.

I left the LCNUK Annual Conference feeling invigorated and motivated, with a renewed sense of pride in the service we collectively provide to people affected by lung cancer.

It was a great opportunity to network with colleagues from across the UK and hear about excellent work being delivered in spite of the Covid pandemic. I particularly valued the keynote presentation by Dr David Baldwin who provided an insightful evaluation of lung cancer services and the ‘route back to improving lung cancer survival’.

Another highlight was the study exploring stigma in never-smokers presented by Dr Georgia Black; I’ll watch with interest her future research on the subject.

It was fascinating to learn more about treatment developments and most importantly, how lung cancer nurses are leading the way in their independent clinics.

I think critical too is the imperative for the lung cancer nurse workforce to not lose sight of the importance of looking after ourselves; and the conference really highlighted that. The session led by Jayne Ellis on ‘compassion fatigue’ really struck a chord and I hope this is something we can continue to keep in mind in our daily work.

Overall, a brilliant opportunity to refresh both professionally and personally!
