I moved to London from the Wirral to do my nursing training at Barts hospital in 1991 and after completion of my training went straight into the field Oncology. Next year will be my 20 year anniversary of being a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in the field of oncology and palliative care; I have been fortunate to work in some of the largest and most renown London oncology and palliative care centres of excellence. Over the last 10 years, I have been a Lung cancer CNS (albeit with a brief foray into the role of an Acute Oncology CNS in 2016) both in a ‘diagnostic centre’ and currently in a specialist tertiary referral centre. I remain passionate about excellence in patient care and have developed a special interest in the needs and care of patients who have an oncogenic mutation driven lung cancer. I have just been successful in obtaining a secondment position with the North Thames Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (GMSA) to carry out a project pertaining to support the development of a framework to identify care pathways for Lung Cancer patients which will enable equitable access to genetic/genomic medicine, embedding this into everyday clinical care across England. I am excited by the potential of this Darzi fellowship and hope to continue to collaborate with stakeholders across a wide variety of settings (LCNUK members, members of the Oncogenic Mutation Driven Lung Cancer Patient Alliance as well as national Lung Cancer Specific Charities) to ensure Lung Cancer specialist nurse input as well as public and patient involvement is integral to any project undertaken. I look forward to being a committee member of the LCNUK and thank you for this opportunity.
