The lung cancer CNS is increasingly faced with competing demands and pressures. Attending the lung cancer conference gave the opportunity to breath and reflect on how to support my patients, colleagues and self. Updates on new treatments were informative, and relevant to our practice where we are privileged to see these implemented for our patients, but also share the challenge of dealing with new and difficult side effects on a practical basis.
New information about driving with brain metastases, has potential to positively impact on our patients, whilst challenging established norms for us as nurses,
The opportunity to talk to patients on the conference stands, was inspiring and highlighted issues that we see daily in our own patients, and the challenges they have living with their disease. Mel Erwin ended the conference on a real high and I will cherish her statement ‘is there anything more I need to know to care for you in the best way’.
I left the conference on a ‘high’, positive about the impact we as lung cancer nurses can have on our patients, and how to meet the challenges ahead as treatment of lung cancer becomes more complex with improved outcomes.
