Research undertaken in the past has shown that the title nurse is used by many different groups who are not on nursing registers and recent analysis of coroners prevention of future death notices have alluded to this being a substantial issue.
Recently a registered nurse who has been struck off has told the media she intends to continue to call herself a nurse. She is fully entitled to do this.  Professor Alison Leary and colleagues are petitiioning parliament for a change in law to limit the use of nurse to those on professional registers i.e. registered nurses, dental nurses etc.   We're supporting this campaign and if you also support this please do consider signing the petition.  You do not have to be a healthcare professional to sign, its open to any UK citizen over 18. So, if you feel able, please do sign the petition and share with your networks.

LuCE plans to develop a report on “Living with lung cancer: survivorship and quality of life” to explore how patients´ and caregivers´ lives have changed since diagnosis and how they perceive and evaluate their quality of life.  If you have patients who might be willing to participate please provide them with the link below.  The survey is anonymous.   The deadline for completing the survey is 1st July 2021.

Long-term results from the STARS trial, led by Joe Chang et al which was presented at this year's ASCO, indicate that stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) is not inferior to video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) with mediastinal lymph node dissection (L-MLND) in patients with operable stage IA non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

We have two webinars coming up in the next fortnight.  The first, sponsored by AstraZeneca will focus on the use of Durvalumab in the treatment of unresectable stage III NSCLC will take place on 29 June at 4.30PM. The second webinar focuses on the National Lung Cancer Audit, your role in supporting the audit and what we gain from the audit.  Speakers include NLCA lead Dr Neal Navani.  This webinar will take place on 7 July at 4.30PM

After a forced break due to COVID-19, our Annual Workshop is back.  We'll be developing and implementing a project around the CNS role in supporting psychological needs of patients with lung cancer.  This face to face meeting takes place on 4/5 October 2021 with follow up virtual meetings.  This is a great opportunity for professional development as well as catching up with old friends and networking.

LCNUK is delighted to announce funding for one - two small projects up to a total value of £5,000 per application.  Projects should generate research, evaluation or audit data that inform the practice of LCNUK members. The closing date for applications has been extended to 25 June 2021.

Lilly will be running a webinar on the 6th July at 5.30PM.  The webinar will focus on Selpercatinib, a new precision medicine for RET-positive NSCLC and features RET fusions, an introduction to Selpercatinib, safety and dosing and more.  Speakers include Jackie Fenemore.

Dr Matthew Johnson, Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse, based at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals, has received a grant to investigate the experience of people and their main carer who have been living with mesothelioma for three years or more. He is currently seeking patients to participate in the study. If you have patients who might be interested please recommend them.
