Cancer Research UK have produced a series of resources which explore the elements of a first touch communication approach, introduced by Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (at Aintree University Hospital), and the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (at Liverpool Lung Cancer Unit), for newly diagnosed patients with lung cancer.  The first touch approach is defined as maintaining a positive dialogue with all patients and focuses on the affirmative options for encouraging treatment

A study of patients who were smokers at the time of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) diagnosis revealed possible links to improved survival outcomes with smoking cessation in this population. The study results were reported in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

Decision-making about cancer treatment relies on effective communication between HCPs and patients. It is also a common point of communication breakdown. Nurses are expected to support patients in the decision-making process, but to do this they need to understand the factors that affect decision-making.  A review article exploring this theme has been published in Cancer Nursing Practice

The LCNUK Annual Workshop is back. We'll be developing and implementing a project around the CNS role in supporting psychological needs of patients with lung cancer. This face to face meeting takes place on 4/5 October 2021 with follow up virtual meetings. Bereavement is a normal part of life that all of us will experience at some point.  But right now in the UK, bereavement leave is not statutory meaning it is up to employers to decide how much, if any, leave you are entitled to.
