The IASLC World Conference  on Lung Cancer 2020, to be held in Singapore, has now launched its call for abstracts.  If you are planning to submit an abstract do let us know.  LCNUK is hoping to help support members who have had an abstract accepted with a contribution towards travel in the form of a travel bursary.

In association with MSD, and hosted by MP, James Brokenshire, LCNUK is running a Parliamentary Fly In to highlight the value of the Lung CNS. The event will  take place on  4th March from 12.30 - 15.30.   Up to £250 travel expenses will be covered.  Places are limited.  Book now if you wish to attend. 

You can help fellow member, Simon Bolton, to evaluate post-surgery follow-up guidance by completing a short audit questionnaire (16 questions which take only 5 minutes to complete). The study will not identify which is the 'best' method of follow up but should provide insight into the more commonly used protocols and help guide future projects. Only one LCNS is required to complete the survey from each hospital so please coordinate with your colleagues on who will respond for your hospital. Please complete before 29 February. 

Mesothelioma UK is committed to supporting research into all aspects of treatment and care related to mesothelioma. Working in collaboration with LCNUK, up to £25,000 is available for a member or group of members to undertake a small scale research study, a complex audit or a preliminary enquiry to support a larger grant application. Don't miss out on attending our Promoting Research in Oncology Nursing workshop on 4/5 June at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Birmingham. This workshop aims to explore and support those participating in moving from an idea for research to developing a full funding proposal.  Participants will be eligible to apply to LCNUK for financial support to take their research idea.  

Thymic UK  is a support and advocacy group for patients with cancers of he thymus gland.  The group has an active Facebook page (ThymicUK) and they also host regular meetings throughout the UK.  Please share details of the group 

Watch Professor Robert Rintoul, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,  share his highlights from this year’s BTOG meeting in this video clip from VJ Oncology. In this clip he discusses the early diagnosis of lung cancer, including the NELSON study, as well as the approaches used in stage 3 lung cancer. 

Protective cells in the lungs of ex-smokers could explain why quitting smoking reduces the risk of developing lung cancer. Scientists from the Wellcome Sanger Institute and UCL have discovered that compared to current smokers, people who had stopped smoking had more genetically healthy lung cells, which have a much lower risk of developing into cancer.
