We are delighted to announce Mick Peake and Maria Guerin as new honorary members of LCNUK for their services to lung cancer. Professor Peake is Clinical Director of the Centre for Cancer Outcomes, University College London Hospitals. He has been involved in the development of national cancer policy since the mid-1990s. Maria is currently a quality matron at Liverpool hospitals and was one of the first Lung Cancer CNS in the North West. Maria has a long history of representation on various committees and advisory bodies.

We are looking for Committee Members! The role enables you to get involved in planning and to influence the future decisions of LCNUK. Although there is an inevitable time commitment, the role is rewarding and inspiring. This position is voluntary but standard class travel expenses and locum costs are covered. The LCNUK Annual Award programme is a fantastic opportunity for current members to showcase a project or initiative they have been involved with. The Award is £1,500 and exists to recognize and celebrate the achievements of LCNUK members. Applications close 30th September 2022.

LCNUK is delighted to announce funding for one - two small projects up to a total value of £5,000 per application. Projects should generate research, evaluation or audit data that inform the practice of LCNUK members. The application closing date is 2 September 2022 at 5pm.

Based on experiences within the Oxford Pleural and Cancer team, when discussing Talc Pleurodesis patients asked what happens to fluid formation after sealing the pleural space. Although the usual response is to reassure patients, to date there has not been any study analysing rates of ascites or contralateral effusions following a pleurodesis. Based on responses to this survey researchers can attempt to study this and provide some evidence for the reassurances currently provided to patients. Any questions please email Anand.

Led by Mr Babu Naidu, Birmingham Hospitals Trust, a new NIHR research programme is taking place to explore whether a new app based prehabilitation programme 'Fit4Surgery', involving exercise, nutrition and health information before and after curative lung cancer treatment can improve the number of days a patient spends at home within 30 days after surgery.

Researchers are conducting a double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial to assess the efficacy and safety of durvalumab in combination with oleclumab or monalizumab in patients with locally advanced, unresectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), who did not progress after platinum-based concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT).

Based on the information collected from the Royal Surrey Hospital, prospective analysis from the local cancer register shows only 10-15% of two week wait referrals have had the diagnoses of lung cancer over the past 3 years. The objective of this survey is to identify an appropriate job title for Lung Cancer Nurse Specialists who cover the diagnostic pathway for Lung Cancer.

According to new research, small cell lung cancer can be divided into several subgroups in terms of clinical behaviour, just like non-small cell lung cancer. These subtypes respond differently to chemotherapeutics and targeted drugs. This opens up possibilities for personalized treatment for this type of cancer as well.

Quitting smoking at or around the time of diagnosis improves the overall survival of lung cancer patients according to a systematic review and meta-analysis undertaken by an Italian Cancer Research team led by Saverio Caini. The findings of this work were reported in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology earlier this year.

Thymic malignancy has been a focus during this special awareness month and no more so than by Thymic UK, a UK charity providing advocacy and support for people with thymic cancers.
