LCNUK, as part of its annual workshop programme, are undertaking a project to determine if the routine use of an anxiety and depression screening tool could be integrated into daily clinical practice to enable an open dialogue with the patient about any cancer related anxieties or concerns. Please support this member-led project by completing a short survey comprising 8 simple fields and taking less than 5 minutes to complete.

The project should relate to the care of patients with lung cancer/mesothelioma and/or their carers and to the role of the lung cancer nurse specialist.

LCNUK is seeking expressions of interest from members interested in chairing our thoracic surgical sub-group. The LCNUK Thoracic Surgical Group is involved in the production and dissemination of information and guidance in relation to thoracic surgery. The group meets at least three times a year and funding is provided to support travel expenses. Interested members should in the first instance email us to express their interest.

A new paper co-authored by ex LCNUK chair, Vanessa Beattie, has been published which explores whether people with mesothelioma who respond to the English Cancer Patient Experience Survey are representative of the national mesothelioma population. This manuscript reports on a data comparison with cancer registry patients from the National Lung Cancer Audit.

BTOG have recently undertaken a podcast between BTOG Steering Committee Vice Chair, Dr Tom Newsom Davis, Consultant in Medical Oncology, London and Karen Clayton, Deputy Chair of LCNUK to discuss the role of the lung cancer nurse specialist.

Results of the phase 3 ORIENT-11 trial presented at the 2022 European Lung Cancer Congress (ELCC) have shown that adding sintilimab to chemotherapy improves overall survival (OS) in patients with advanced, nonsquamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Up to £40,000 of grant funding is being made available by Mesothelioma UK to support mesothelioma research. The deadline for submission is 23 May 2022. More information on the study themes and details on how to apply can be found in the briefing document.

Recent work suggests that people frequently report the impact that mesothelioma has on their mental health yet there have been very few studies specifically focused on mental health and mesothelioma. A new study by the Mesothelioma UK Research Centre aims to create an understanding of the impact of mesothelioma on the mental health of patients, their families and close friends, and what people do to improve their mental health and well-being. Please share with your patients.

This module from RCNi Learning, sponsored by Abbott, explores the importance of nutritional support for patients with cancer as part of their assessment and treatment plan. The learning module examines the role of nurses in screening patients and identifying malnutrition using nutritional screening tools. It also introduces the concept of prehabilitation and how it can improve patient health, quality of life and treatment outcomes.
