National Lung Cancer Audit - Important Information 

LCNUK have been advisd by the National Lung Cancer Audit team that data being collected on patients seen by a Lung CNS is not reflecting what is happening in the real world and the field "seen by a lung CNS" field is not being checked due to the different practices in place.  Many clinical teams, for example, have created virtual clinics to reduce the number of hospital visits for patients, including breaking bad news over the telephone. The lung CNS is often then picking up the patient at a later time or a later date.

The NLCA want to ask the lung CNS community to use their judgment as to which fields they populate when they have reviewed the patient. If they have spoken to the patient during the same session or on the same day, that can be classed as ‘seen at the time of diagnosis’.

The NLCA do not want the ‘seen by a lung CNS‘ measure to be distorted by this change in practice, as the majority of teams will likely fall into the outlier section.

CT scan catches 70% of lung cancers at early stage, NHS study finds

Initial findings from the Summit study has identified 180 cases of lung cancer among 12,100 smokers and those who have quit. Of those, 70% were at stage one and two.

The Summit study, led by UCL London, plans to enrol 25,000 people aged between 55 and 77, who are at higher risk of lung and other cancers due to a significant smoking history.  Its findings are due to be published in a medical journal later this year.

New Research Lead at LCNUK 

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Cathy Henshall as LCNUK Research lead following the resignation of Janelle Yorke.  Cathy is a Senior Nursing Research Fellow and holds a clinical academic post at OxINMAHR, Oxford Brookes University, where she is the Head of Research Delivery and manager of the NIHR cognitive health Clinical Research Facility. Cathy’s clinical background is in oncology nursing.  We're excited that Cathy will be leading the research focus for LCNUK
